In today’s world, it is important that consumers have an understanding of insurance. As teens learn to drive and prepare for graduation, it’s the perfect time for them to learn about insurance so they are prepared when it is time for them to purchase their own.
That’s why each year we present the Educator of the Year award to an Ohio educator for their outstanding ability to incorporate insurance or financial literacy topics into their students’ coursework.
About the award
The award recipient receives $1,000 for themselves, $500 for their school, a plaque, and is invited to an awards ceremony at the Ohio Insurance Institute’s annual meeting. In addition, the award recipient also receives reimbursement of course fees for successfully completing a future graduate-credit workshop or course designed for high school educators (max. $500, subjects covered must include some insurance topics).
“The Insurance Educator of the Year award is our way of recognizing an Ohio teacher for excellence in insurance education,” said Amanda Peltier, Vice President of Education and Workforce Development. “It’s necessary for students to understand how insurance works, as it’s an important tool in protecting against the financial risks that will be present throughout their lives. “
What awardees are saying
The 2018 Insurance Educator of the Year was awarded to Rachel Rohrs, an educator at Lincolnview High School in Van Wert, OH.
Rohrs and her students partnered with Central Insurance Companies and participated in InVEST, a free, national program for high school and community college students that educates on insurance, financial services, and risk management topics, as well as encourages participants to pursue a career in the insurance industry.
When asked why she chose to participate in the program, Rohrs said “The current push in education is to provide as many real world experiences as possible and that can be difficult to achieve at times. This program allowed me to make insurance more real for my students, connect them with one of our largest area employers, and learn about insurance myself.”
