Is a Home Security System Right for You?

Are you considering investing in a home security system? It makes sense to be proactive in protecting your home, belongings and loved ones. However, as with any investment, you want to make sure you do your research to ensure your investment in a home security system and its maintenance results in a positive return.

With ever changing technology and the introduction of smart home security systems there are more options now than ever. Here are a few factors to consider while deciding if a home security system is right for you.

Does your insurance provider offer discounts on your home insurance policy if you have a home security system?

Many of our members offer discounts you may apply for by being proactive and taking extra precautions to protect your home. Make sure you check with your provider before installing to see if discounts may apply.

American Family Insurance offers a Safe, Secure, Smart Home Discount. This discount involves installation of smart home technology that reduces the threat of burglary, theft, water damage and more.

The Cincinnati Insurance Companies offers discounts for installing a home alarm system installed and monitored by a central station.

Ohio Mutual Insurance Group,  Nationwide, GEICO and Western Reserve Group all offer discounts for certain types of protective devices such as burglar alarms.

Do you have items in your home that are irreplaceable?

Insurance policies do a great job covering your home and everything in it. However, some items like family heirlooms, printed photographs and items with high sentimental value are irreplaceable. Having a home security system is an additional precaution you can take to ensure irreplaceable items are better protected. Having a home security system oftentimes deters burglars. According to SafeWise, 60 percent of convicted burglars say they will target another home if they discover a security system in the one they are trying to rob.

It is hard to effectively evaluate the price of comfort and peace of mind when it comes to keeping your home and family safe. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all solution for home security. Some people prefer to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to protecting their home. Make sure you investigate discounts available, assess what valuables you have that cannot be replaced, and consult with your insurance agent prior to making a decision.
