Part 1: Internships, Scholarships and Educational Outreach Opportunities Abound
February marks the second annual Insurance Careers Month, a month-long campaign designed to generate awareness surrounding career opportunities in the insurance industry. Backed by a coalition of organizations, companies and industry professionals, Insurance Careers Month aims to illuminate the variety of insurance career paths available to students and aspiring young professionals.
OII and our members proudly support Insurance Careers Month and the industry-wide effort to educate the public on insurance as a career destination.
In the first of our two-part series, we feature varied educational initiatives shared by our members to attract, retain and nurture tomorrow’s industry leaders.
INTERNSHIPS & SCHOLARSHIPS
What better way to investigate a potential career choice and gain real-world experience than through an internship? Insurance companies offer a multitude of internship programs that help students and recent grads learn more about the day-to-day responsibilities and job functions that align with their skills and interest.
Whether you’re an aspiring actuary, data analyst or marketer, nothing can help set you up for success quite like on-the-job education and mentorship. Here are just some programs offered by our members.
Intern with Motorists Insurance
Headquartered in Columbus, Motorists Insurance Group actively works to attract, develop and retain top talent—and that begins with investing in the professional development of a highly motivated team of interns.
Revamped in 2015, Motorists’ internship program is based on feedback from past interns and designed to offer a truly meaningful experience. Its interns develop team building and leadership skills, while tackling real-world problems for the company. They also receive ongoing mentorship from an associate in their area of interest.
Beyond their work, interns are invited to participate in social and community service events, and given access to the company’s 24-hour fitness facility.

Erie Insurance Future Focus Internship Program
Erie Insurance offers full-time college students in their sophomore or junior year (or those completing a master’s degree program), the opportunity to obtain a challenging, rewarding internship position.
Erie’s paid internship positions span a wide variety of disciplines, including accounting/finance, actuarial sciences, human resources, information technology, marketing and more.

Intern with Grinnell Mutual
Grinnell Mutual offers a paid internship program to college students interested in exploring insurance opportunities. From the classroom to the boardroom, Grinnell helps students expand their skill sets through a collaborative learning environment and proudly shares its internship mission: We believe education can change the world.
Undergraduate students who have completed their sophomore or junior year, with majors in accounting, business, economics, finance, computer science, insurance or marketing are encouraged to apply.

Westfield Insurance Internship & Graduate Programs
Westfield Insurance provides college students the opportunity to receive meaningful internships that connect their field of study with real-world experience. Its program includes job shadowing and training, mentorship, networking events and performance management.
Westfield also offers a unique graduate development program linking the talent, interests and skills of recent grads with potential positions within the company that includes additional educational opportunities, cross training and team building.
Internships & Education Outreach Through Ohio Mutual
Another OII member, Ohio Mutual Insurance Group (OMIG) is proactive in providing insurance career and education outreach to school-age students and teachers. The company annually extends an open invitation to eighth graders from local school districts to visit their campus, learning firsthand about insurance career opportunities.

Lastly, the company has established connections with Ohio colleges and universities that offer risk management majors, including Bowling Green State University and Tiffin University. “We couldn’t ask for a better partnership,” is how Tiffin President Lillian Schumacher, describes their collaborative efforts.
EDUCATION & CAREER OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Central Insurance Launches TechCamp
Last June, Central Insurance Companies held its first annual summer TechCamp for local middle school students. The two one-week sessions included interactive, hands-on projects in computer programming and multimedia design.
Lead by members of Central’s Learning and Development, IT and Marketing departments, students designed and built video games using block code, created commercials using green screen technology, explored the internal workings of a computer, and improved their creative problem-solving skills.
Campers were also treated to an exploration of Central’s campus, home of its incredible Fire Museum with firefighting memorabilia and equipment dating back to the 1700’s.
This year’s TechCamp promises to offer even more.
Creative College Connections Through State Auto
As part of its unique approach to connect with college students, State Auto‘s campus ambassador program encourages associates to participate in on-campus marketing and recruitment activities at various colleges and universities. This initiative goes beyond traditional career fairs, and includes speaking opportunities on various topics related to student development/preparation for the workforce. State Auto offers a 10-12 week summer internship program, often leading to full-time employment upon graduation.
Additionally, State Auto created a unique approach to career awareness, designed to reflect the excitement and diversity of insurance opportunities. In a true fashion show format, its Not Your Grandma’s Insurance Industry Style Show, features company volunteers who walk the runway as insurance models while a moderator describes their career paths. This further communicates the sentiment that no matter your style, insurance has a career to comfortably align with your interests. State Auto recently conducted an “insurance style show” as part of a finance bootcamp through InVEST. Another one is scheduled for Feb. 22 at Cristo Rey High School in Columbus, during Insurance Careers Month.
Insurance Education Support from EMC Insurance
For years, the EMC Center for Insurance and Risk Management at Drake University has supported programs and research in insurance, risk management and actuarial science. Supported by Des Moines-based EMC Insurance, the center connects students, faculty, and working professionals in industry, government, and professional educational organizations.
Through Drake’s Kelley Continuing Education Program, EMC also supports selected CPCU courses for the educational enrichment and development of aspiring insurance professionals.
A number of EMC’s young professionals share how they’ve discovered a work of opportunity in their video, “It’s Not Just Insurance.”
EMC also offers a variety of internship and scholarship programs, while company associates participate in area job fairs.
Leadership Academy at Frankenmuth Insurance
Last year, Frankenmuth Insurance, in partnership with Northwood University, the Tuscola County Intermediate School District, InsuringMIFuture.org and Frankenmuth Public Schools, launched a program designed to increase awareness among high school students on the diverse and rewarding career opportunities within our industry.
The Insurance Leadership Academy, spearheaded by Frankenmuth’s Bryan Gilleland,
provides high school junior and seniors with the opportunity to earn college credit through an on-site program that includes coursework developed by Dr. Diana Webb, Faculty Lead for Northwood University’s Insurance and Risk Management Program. The program also offers job shadowing, insurance industry guest presenters, and engaging activities designed around job-specific skills.
