Top 10 P/C Companies by 2003 Premium
Volume for Selected Lines

The Top 10 P/C insurance companies for selected personal and commercial lines are provided for both Ohio and the US, based on their 2003 direct premiums written. The information also provides insurer market share based on 2003 premium volume. Also provided is the total premium volume for each product line. Direct premiums written and market shares have been rounded.

In 2004 there were 1,367 domestic life/health insurance companies, 2,749 domestic property/casualty insurers, 585 domestic health insurers and 126 fraternal domestics in the US.

According to A.M. Best data for 2003, only two states Pennsylvania and Illinois, have more homeowners insurance providers than Ohio. In 2003, there were 296 companies licensed to write homeowners insurance in the Buckeye state. Ohio’s total homeowners premium volume ranks eighth in the nation.

According to A.M. Best data for 2003 no other state has more private passenger auto insurance providers than Ohio. In 2003, there were 416 companies licensed to write personal lines auto insurance in the Buckeye state, with Ohio’s total auto premium volume ranking ninth in the nation.

Ohio ranks seventh in the US based on total direct premiums written for all P/C lines in 2003. California accounted for the largest amount of direct premiums written followed by TX, NY, FL, IL and PA. Ohio’s direct premiums written for all P/C lines for 2003 was $16.4 billion, about 3.8% of US P/C total direct premiums written.

Median jury awards for medical malpractice doubled between 1995–2000, increasing from $500,000 to $1 million. Median out-of-court settlements were also up significantly, rising 40% from $350,000 to $500,000 during that period.
