The Insurance Information Institute estimates that premiums for cyber security insurance will reach between $2–$3 billion within the next five years, although only about $100 million in premiums were reported for the year ending July 2003. A recent Ernst & Young survey confirms that only 7% of firms now carry the coverage. (Crain’s New York Business, 2/16/04)

A 2003 Assurex Global Partners survey found that few employers are protecting themselves against “e-disasters,” even though 19% have been sued for e-mail abuse, 31% have lost confidential information and/or intellectual property through e-mail, and 35% have fired workers for e-mail/Internet abuse. Only 48% of employers surveyed make use of content security software, and just 40% educate their employees about electronic viruses. (Insurance Advocate, 3/24/03)
