In 2002, 130 people died in Super Bowl Sunday traffic crashes. 77 of those deaths (59%) were alcohol-related. On New Year’s Day weekend that year, 299 died in alcohol-related crashes, representing 52% of crash deaths that weekend. 298 died in alcohol-related crashes Labor Day weekend in 2002, representing 55% of crash deaths that weekend.
