Traffic volumes continue to climb in Ohio, along
with safety. Vehicle-miles are used to measure traffic volume
(a vehicle-mile is one mile traveled by one vehicle). Ohio’s
estimated traffic rose from 82 billion vehicle-miles in 1988
to 108 billion in 2002. In 2002, Ohio’s 1,417 highway
deaths represented a rate of 1.32 deaths per 100 million vehicle-miles.
The national average for 2002 was 1.51.
In 1989, state and national fatality rates were both 2.2 per
100 million vehicle-miles.
