The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 1999 more people were killed in highway work zones than in any previous year. The accident rate, which was up 26% from 1997 to 872 fatalities in 1999, is attributed in part to more federal funds being used to repair the nation’s crowded highways.
